Many people dismiss what they think is a minor strain or sprain. These types of injuries occur when a muscle is pulled suddenly, there is an unexpected fall, or a sharp twist. It can often be difficult to tell when the RICE method will be enough for that strain or sprain or if it is time to visit the ER. Learning the symptoms of a strain or sprain may get you to the emergency room in time before the injury worsens.
The symptoms of a sprain or strain include:
- Limited range of motion
- Muscle weakness
- Pain in area, even when resting
When you first become injured, try RICE:
- Rest and avoid activity
- Ice the strain or sprain for 20 minutes every hour
- Compress the strain or sprain
- Elevation of the injured area
And be sure to talk to your primary care doctor.
Call 911 or go to the ER for your strain or sprain if YOU:
- Are unable to put weight on an injured leg or arm
- See sudden swelling or the affected joint looks deformed
- Feel an intense and unbearable pain at the place of injury
