Jean Meyer has been named to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer, Ascension Michigan, effective August 1, 2017. Meyer will serve in a dyad relationship with Donald D. Bignotti, MD, Ascension Michigan Chief Clinical Officer, with joint responsibility for developing and managing the health system’s clinically integrated system of care. Since 2013 she has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of St. John Providence in Detroit, part of Ascension Michigan.
“The rapidly evolving healthcare environment, with its growing emphasis on consumerism, requires us to accelerate change, engage collaboratively and work more closely together as an integrated ministry,” said Gwen MacKenzie, Senior Vice President, Ascension Healthcare, and Ascension Michigan Ministry Market Executive. “Operating as one truly integrated ministry will support the optimization of our clinical care processes and our goal of providing those we serve with greater and more convenient access and a consistent experience, regardless of where and how they receive care.”
The transition will align Ascension Michigan’s operations with its newly integrated consumer branding and marketing approach, according to Nick Ragone, Ascension Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer.
“Now more than ever, those we serve have instant access to unlimited information about their choices, which heightens their expectations of us and the providers who work with us,” he said. “As an integrated Ascension Michigan, our doctors, clinics and hospitals will be able to provide responsive solutions and exceed our consumers’ expectations.”
“Jean is a tremendous choice to take on these new responsibilities,” MacKenzie said. “She is a thoughtful and dedicated servant leader who always views hospital operations through the eyes of a caregiver. Her career has been marked by her drive, determination and compassion.”
Meyer has more than 27 years of experience in Catholic healthcare including front-line patient care experience as a registered nurse and senior leadership experience within a large health system. Prior to her role as President and CEO, she served as President of Acute Care Operations and Executive Vice President for St. John Providence Health System, and previously President of Providence Park Hospital from 2008-2011. Earlier Meyer held the position of Senior Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer for the St. John Providence Health System and Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, part of Ascension Indiana, where she spent 15 years in various leadership roles, including Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer.
Meyer began her career as an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist in Chicago. She received a bachelor’s degree in public health education from the University of Wisconsin in La Crosse. She completed her work for a bachelor’s degree in nursing as well as her master’s degree from Loyola University of Chicago. She also was a member of the first community of the Ascension Leadership Academy.
“We are excited to be taking this important step in building an integrated Ascension Michigan,” MacKenzie said.
