Young Expectant Parent Class

This class is specifically designed for young women (ages 20 and under) who are expecting their first baby.  This class will prepare the expectant mother for labor and delivery.  We will also provide guidance on pregnancy, parenting and available resources.  Class should be completed between the 24th to 34th week of pregnancy.  Expectant mothers are encouraged to bring one or two support people.  Please bring a blanket, pillows, and snacks/drinks for the day. Class is free, you will be contacted for insurance information. Free diapers will be given at the completion of the class.

Childbirth Education eClass

Understanding Birth: eClass, is a unique online learning experience that provides comprehensive, evidence-based information you can trust as you prepare for your upcoming birth. In this class, you’ll learn all about the birth process and medical procedures through instructive video clips, animations, and interactive games. You’ll also get a sense of what labor’s really like as you watch several complete birth stories, and you’ll even have an opportunity to create your own birth plan! Included in your registration is a tour of the Birthplace at Crittenton and a skills session with one of our childbirth educators. 1 - STOP Screening: Peripheral Vascular Disease Screening

Are you concerned about your heart health? The 1-STOP screening includes several potentially life-changing assessments such as: blood pressure, body fat analysis, weight, health risk appraisal, peripheral vascular disease screening, and lab work. The lab work includes a lipid panel (cholesterol and triglycerides), fasting blood sugar, and C-reactive protein, which may be associated with an increased risk for heart disease. Once you have completed your screening, you will discuss the results with a family medicine physician. Participants must be at least 50 years of age. This screening could change your life. Cost is $25. After registering, you will be contacted to set up an appointment time.  If preferred you may call 248.652.5269 for an appointment time.  You must have blood drawn (lab work) done a minimum of 2 days BEFORE your 1 STOP Screening appointment.

Prepared Childbirth 4-week series

Knowing what to expect prior to the birth of your baby will go a long way towards helping prepare you and your family.  Whether you are planning to give birth naturally or with the assistance of medications, this class is designed to help an expectant mother and her support partner prepare for the birth of her baby.  For your comfort, we recommend completing this series 2-3 months before your due date.  Please bring a blanket and 2 pillows. ACLS Provider Skills Session

ENPC-Emergency Nurses Pediatric Course

Children Under 18 years of age account for approximately 34% of all emergency department (ED) visits, with children under the age of 3 representing the largest group.  The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia studies their ED visit log only to find that of the 80,000 pediatric ED visits only 201 needed resuscitation.  Of these, only 58% required intubation and 30% required PALS.  Critically ill children typically present with prearrest conditions—most commonly respiratory distress and compensated shock.  The ability to recognize and treat these pre-arrest conditions is paramount whether you are in an ED or in a Pediatric Care Unit.  The purpose of ENPC is to present core-level knowledge and psychomotor skills associated with implementing the nursing process in the care of children from birth through adolescence.  It is the intent of ENPC to enhance the nurse’s ability to rapidly and accurately assess the pediatric patient’s responses to the illness or injury event.  The skills and knowledge learned will decrease morbidity and mortality associated with pediatric emergencies and conditions.

Upon successful completion of the ENPC course, all RN participants will receive 15.33 contact hours.  Participants must attend the entire course in order to receive the contact hours.  You must be successful in all testing in order to receive an ENPC provider card from the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA).

Preparing for Breastfeeding

Big Brother/Big Sister Class

Your children may have lots of questions about your pregnancy, and a few anxieties about what life will be like with a new baby around!  This class can help them learn about the coming event in a positive way and participate fully in all the preparation. Kids will tour The Birthplace to see where mom will stay. They'll hear a story, ask questions and practice holding a baby. They will also pick up helpful pointers about caring for the newest member of the family. An adult must attend the class with the child.  Suggested for children ages 3 and up. PALS Provider

The goal of the PALS course is to aid the pediatric healthcare provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. The course is designed for physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support pediatric emergencies. The PALS Provider program is designed for persons who have not attended a PALS program in the past or those persons who have let their certification lapse. Upon successful completion of a written exam and MegaCode, a 2 year American Heart Association certification card will be issued. Materials will be sent 1-2 weeks prior to the class.

This class covers adult, child and infant CPR, foreign body airway obstruction, use of mouth-to-barrier device, and automatic external defibrillator training.  The course is designed for the general community & lay responders including security guards, lifeguards, day care workers, coaches, custodians, teachers who need a credentialed CPR class but do not work in the healthcare setting. Upon successful demonstration of CPR skills, an American Heart Association completion card will be provided at the end of the program.

Heartsaver First Aid and CPR with AED

This 8 hour class covers the fundamental concepts regarding First Aid and CPR and is designed for people needing certification for employment. Persons who commonly take this class include teachers, personal trainers, lifeguards, and athletic coaches.  Bleeding, shock, splinting, and burns will be covered as well as adult, child, and infant CPR and use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED). An American Heart Association course completion card will be issued to participants at the end of the session.
