James Huebner, a retired orthopaedic physician, was among Crittenton’s first doctors. An innovator in orthopedic surgery, he created the Huebner Method of surgery which is still used at Crittenton today. Ruth Huebner is a lifetime member of Crittenton’s Auxiliary and began her volunteer work at Crittenton shortly after it opened in 1967. Throughout their careers, both saw first-hand the importance of Nurses. “Nurses are an incredibly important part of the healthcare team. The relationships they build with patients, families and physicians create a better healing environment. We want to make sure Crittenton nurses know they are valued.”

Though the couple now resides in Florida, they consider Rochester their home and remain invested in Crittenton’s future. Dr. and Mrs. Huebner first established their donation for the Nursing Excellence Award winners in 2007. Winners are chosen annually during Nurses Week and are honored throughout the year.

Crittenton Hospital’s new website has won an Interactive Advertising Competition (IAC) Award for Outstanding Website. The IAC Awards highlight the best in online advertising across 96 industries and nine online formats including, online ad, video, mobile, newsletter, email and social media. The IAC Awards are produced by the Web Marketing Association to honor excellence in online advertising as well as recognize the individuals and organizations responsible.

The website was designed and built to be pragmatic, yet visually appealing, and simple to use. It has improved the hospital’s ability to communicate, share, engage, and conduct business online. The site is easily managed through a content management system, and offers several opportunities for the online visitor to communicate with hospital staff.

“Updating the website was long overdue and essential to the future success of Crittenton. LevelSet Solutions helped us create a site that is user-friendly, and informative,” explained Brian Birney, Director of Marketing and Communications. “It’s visual, engaging and most importantly, we have seen improvements in our key performance indicators. This award validates our strategy and we look for future successes with LevelSet at our side.”

Crittenton has also won two silver-level advertising awards in the 30th Annual Healthcare Advertising Awards and the 2013 Aster Awards for its “Hospital-ity” advertising campaign. The campaign is comprised of a series of digital ads and TV commercials that convey a philosophy validated and reinforced in every aspect of the Crittenton experience.

With nearly 4,000 entries, the Healthcare Advertising Awards, sponsored by the Healthcare Marketing Report (HMR), is the largest healthcare advertising awards competition in the country; and one of the ten largest of all advertising awards. HMR is the leading publication covering all aspects of healthcare marketing, advertising and strategic business development. The awards, judged by a national panel of healthcare marketing experts, were reviewed for creativity, quality, message effectiveness, customer appeal, graphic design and overall impact. Silver awards were given to approximately 241 institutions.

The Aster Awards receives approximately 3,000 entries from across the United States, Canada and South America. The program provides healthcare organizations and advertising agencies the opportunity to compete against similarly sized organizations within the United States and abroad. The Aster Awards Program, hosted by Creative Images, Inc., is an elite competition recognizing the nation’s most talented healthcare marketing professionals for outstanding excellence in advertising. Entries compete against similar-sized organizations and must score in the top 85% to receive an award. Judging criteria includes creativity, layout and design, functionality, message effectiveness, production quality and overall appeal.

“Since working with PUSH 22 we have experienced a dramatic increase in brand and specialty recognition within our target communities and demographics,” said Birney. “It is exciting for Crittenton and PUSH 22 to be recognized for the hard work it took to develop the highly creative, strategically executed campaigns that we have launched through the past year.”

National media attention has been given to a new avian influenza A (H7N9) virus in China. Oakland County Health Division (OCHD), under the leadership of County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, wants to assure residents that there have been no continental U.S. or Oakland County cases detected.

“Although there is currently no reason for alarm, Public Health remains vigilant and continues to monitor the reports of the H7N9 virus,” said Kathy Forzley, OCHD manager/health officer. “There are no reports of human-to-human transmissions and no travel health warnings or precautions have been issued for those traveling to and from China at this time.”

Although media reports indicate higher numbers, as of April 4, 2013, 11 laboratory-confirmed cases have been detected in China and there are three confirmed deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO reported the first cases on April 1, 2013; this is the first time this strain has been detected in humans. The infections so far have resulted in severe respiratory illness and, in some cases, death. According to WHO, no human-to-human transmission has been identified at this time and the cases do not have a known link to one another. There is an ongoing investigation to determine the source of infection and detect any additional cases.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is following this situation closely and coordinating with domestic and international partners to gather more information, make a knowledgeable public health risk assessment, and develop a candidate vaccine virus. All of these actions are routine preparedness measures taken whenever a new novel influenza virus is detected in humans.

Influenza A H7 viruses are a group of influenza viruses that normally circulate among birds. The influenza A (H7N9) virus is one subgroup among the larger group of H7 viruses. Although some H7 viruses (H7N2, H7N3 and H7N7) have occasionally been found to infect humans, no human infections with H7N9 viruses have been reported until recent reports from China.
