“They treated me like family.” “I felt just like I was family.” “It’s a family affair.” We have all heard or said one of these phrases before. Being treated like a family member is truly significant. It means that you are taken care of in a manner that is unexpected in a good way. But what if you actually are a family member of a hospital employee and have a choice where to be treated? Do that loyalty and that family feeling go away in an emergency?
Gretchen Pagac started working at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center in November 2005 and is currently the Operating Room (OR) Manager. Gretchen has quite a résumé, which is why she has been in charge of instructing her teams in Crittenton’s OR. She has spent countless hours training, performing, and perfecting strategies with her team, acting as if each and every patient was family. When it is your life on the line, or more importantly, a relative’s life on the line, do your team members have the skills to take care of your family? At Crittenton, the answer is yes.

Shortly before Christmas, college sophomore Kat began having pain so bad that her family rushed her to the Emergency Department (ED). Catherine Loniewski, DO, found that Kat had a ruptured appendix and scheduled emergency surgery. When Kat found this out, she said, “I am glad I am here. It’s like being with family. I know they will take good care of me.”
From the preoperative staff and nurses to the housekeeping staff, everyone was informative and friendly. “It was incredibly touching and inspiring to see these people I work and joke with in action for my family member as if she were their family member, all the while knowing this is why we have the best care here—they treat every patient this same way,” says Betsy. A reaction to medication meant spending Christmas in the hospital, but Kat feels that she was with “family” during all her hospital experiences.
