Don’t Be Sidelined by Hip Pain

Michael Yusaf, MD“Hip arthroscopy is an effective treatment for people with torn tissue, structural problems, or other injuries to the hip joint that cause pain,” says Michael Yusaf, MD, Or thopaedic Surgeon at Crittenton. “An arthroscope [tiny camera] and specialized tools allow us to locate the source of hip pain and correct it through two to three small incisions less than half an inch in length.”

An Inside Look

Although patients are asleep, hip arthroscopy is an outpatient procedure. Viewing the hip joint through the arthroscope, Dr. Yusaf can repair tissue, remove any torn pieces of tissue floating in the joint, and correct structural problems of the hip. If severe damage is discovered, additional surgery may be required.

“Most patients go home the same day after the procedure,” says Dr. Yusaf. “A full recovery requires 12 weeks of restricted activity, but patients can resume their lives without hip pain afterward.”

The procedure is performed while patients lie on a special operating table that features traction, which allows the surgeon to pull apart the hip joint to allow room for the instruments used during the surgery. While patients may experience swelling, complication rates are very low.

Dr. Yusaf is one of a small group of surgeons who are experienced in performing hip arthroscopy. In fact, he is one of only three surgeons in southeastern Michigan and the nation who perform the procedure and is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery. He received fellowship training in hip arthroscopy from the University of California, Los Angeles.

The dedicated staff at Crittenton performs one to two procedures a week, offering residents of Rochester and the surrounding communities relief from their hip pain.

“In the past, those suffering with this type of hip pain would have had to travel to specialists outside the state for this type of specialized treatment,” says Dr. Yusaf. “We are proud to offer minimally invasive hip arthroscopy here in Rochester Hills.”

The Road to Recovery

Because hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure and requires very small incisions, patients experience little pain through the recovery process and usually do not require physical therapy. In fact, patients often notice a reduction in hip pain the day following their surgery.
Bleeding can occur in the joint following the procedure, which may result in the patient experiencing some pain, but it typically subsides within a few weeks. Patients may use crutches when they leave the hospital and are allowed to bear weight if it is comfortable for them. If you experience significant pain or complications, contact your physician.
