Women who require surgery for gynecological conditions formerly experienced significant pain and lengthy recovery periods. Now, thanks to the da Vinci® Surgical System—available at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center—that is no longer the case.
"Women who underwent surgery for hysterectomy and gynecological cancers in the past often faced long hospital stays, large incisions, pain, and even trauma,” says Douglas Pugmire, DO, Gynecologic Oncologist and Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at Crittenton. “The da Vinci system is beneficial for surgeons and patients alike. Because the technology gives us better visualization and a more precise method of performing surgery, we are able to complete operations that involve smaller incisions [one to two centimeters], reduced pain, and shorter recoveries for women. It’s a win-win situation.”
Robotically assisted gynecological surgeries offered at Crittenton include:
- Correction of pelvic floor prolapse
- Fertility-sparing procedure
- Hysterectomy
- Oncology services for ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers
- Removal of uterine fibroids
- Treatment of endometriosis
“Crittenton not only provides surgical services for women with cancer, but also a full range of cancer treatment options at the Crittenton Cancer Center,” Dr. Pugmire says. “From surgery and radiation oncology to chemotherapy and additional services, Crittenton provides the full spectrum of gynecological and oncological care.”
Leaders in Robotic Surgery
Crittenton was appointed by Intuitive Surgical Systems Inc. as the first Gynecological/Oncology Epicenter in the country. “Crittenton physicians consult with visiting surgeons who are interested in learning more about practicing robotic surgery,” says Douglas Pugmire, DO, Gynecologic Oncologist and Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at Crittenton. “We answer any questions and share our knowledge of this advanced system.”
