Children Under 18 years of age account for approximately 34% of all emergency department (ED) visits, with children under the age of 3 representing the largest group.  The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia studies their ED visit log only to find  that of the 80,000 pediatric ED visits only 201 needed resuscitation.  Of these, only 58% required intubation and 30% required PALS.  Critically ill children typically present with prearrest conditions—most commonly respiratory distress and compensated shock.  The ability to recognize and treat these pre-arrest conditions is paramount whether you are in an ED or in a Pediatric Care Unit.  The purpose of ENPC is to present core-level knowledge and psychomotor skills associated with implementing the nursing process in the care of children from birth through adolescence.  It is the intent of ENPC to enhance the nurse’s ability to rapidly and accurately assess the pediatric patient’s responses to the illness or injury event.  The skills and knowledge learned will decrease morbidity and mortality associated with pediatric emergencies and conditions.
